Are you a new Christian?
Have you recently asked Jesus to forgive you of your sin and become your personal savior? Do you know for sure that if you died today that heaven will be your home? If not I urge you to read this page here about how you can be absolutely positive that you’ll go to heaven when you die.
If you are saved and you have asked for forgiveness of your sins and you’re wondering what to do next please read below.
I want you to know that making the decision to accept Christ as your savior is the most important decision you will ever make. Congratulations! This is the beginning of your new life in Christ and as a child of God.
The bible says “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
This means YOU are a new creature, a new creation! The Bible says in Ephesians 1:13-14 that we became a new creation and were “sealed with the holy spirit of promise” the moment we believed.
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise. Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory”. –Ephesians 1:13-14
This means that you not only became a new creation the moment you trusted Christ but you also were sealed with the promise of your inheritance which is eternal life in heaven!
As a new Christian, you should know that you are only saved by faith.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9
Once you are saved no man, even yourself can cause you to become unsaved. The Bible says “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” – John 10:28
Now that you’re saved and on your way to heaven it doesn’t mean you’re going to be perfect and you won’t sin or make mistakes anymore. But your goal now should be to live like Christ and not in your old life of sin. Because we are thankful for salvation and what God has done for us, we should want to live our life for him and that’s where good works comes in.
Without God many people of this world believe good works like obeying the law, donating to charity and going to church will get them to heaven, but we both know it doesn’t. It is only after we are saved that through Christ our good works please God.
One of the important things to do after you have trusted Christ is to:
1. Read Your Bible Every Day.
The reason that this is important is because the Bible tells us what God wants us to do, it is God’s Word. As you begin to read it every day, it will cause you to grow spiritually.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” – 2 Timothy 2:15
When you study God’s written word (it’s best to start with the Gospel of John) he will strengthen your faith, speak to your heart, and give you guidance and direction for every need and decision in your life.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” –Psalms 119:105.
If you don’t have a bible, I encourage you to buy one or borrow one from a friend or relative. If you are buying one I only recommend the King James Version. I truly believe it is the preserved and infallible word of God. I don’t recommend any other version even if you think it is easier to read. The other versions have many words that have been changed and now have completely different meanings than the original text and can confuse you.
The KJV is the most accurate translation in English because it is from the preserved Hebrew and Greek texts. All other versions have taken the original English Bible (KJV) and changed it. I don’t know about you but I prefer to read the original account of things and not man’s inaccurate revisions.
2. Pray Every Day. (Talk to God)
It’s important to pray and talk to God daily. He longs to hear from you and to fellowship with you. Prayer is a wonderful resource many Christians neglect to use, but it is a BIG part of having a relationship with God.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 says “Pray without ceasing”. Which means to pray continually. He wants us to be in prayer throughout our day.
You don’t have to use eloquent speech and try and be someone your not with God. He knows your heart and wants you to talk to him like you would any dear friend, with reverence of course. You can talk to God about anything, He is your heavenly father and He wants to know you and have a relationship with you.
3. Start Attending A Bible Believing & Gospel Preaching Church.
It’s important that you find a bible believing and gospel preaching church and that you attend regularly so that your faith can be strengthened by the preaching of God’s Word.
As you go, you will grow spiritually and will be encouraged by the fellowship of the other Christians around you. The church is where we go to worship God and we can learn how to be a Christian. It’s also where the Pastor and spiritual leaders can help you and encourage you in your faith.
The Bible clearly warns us not to be absent from church, we need the strength and encouragement of fellowship with other believers.
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” –Hebrew 10:25
4. Be Baptized According To The Scriptures.
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” – Acts 2:38
After you are saved the next really important step is to get baptized. Baptism is the outward expression showing everyone what you have already done on the inside when you accepted Christ as your savior. We get baptized because we are saved, not to be saved.
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” – Romans 6:4
“For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” – Romans 6:5-6
When you get baptized you should be baptized according to the scriptures and a Biblical baptism is by immersion only. The word “baptize” is translated from the original Greek word “baptizo”, which means to immerse. “Baptizo” does not mean sprinkle or to pour.
5. Witness To Others
If you have been a Christian for any amount of time you should want to tell others about Christ and what he has done for you. The Gospel means the “Good News” and indeed it is! What better news could you give anyone than to tell them how to have eternal life.
“Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.” – Matthew 10:32
Millions of people are lost and think their good works will get them to heaven, but the truth is, without Christ their deeds will never pay the price for their sins. EVERYONE NEEDS CHRIST! Not a single one of us can make it to heaven on our own and we all need to hear the Good News! Imagine how many people would be saved if the newspaper simply printed the good news on the front page every day? But sadly they don’t.
It’s up to us as Christians to share the good news with others. Maybe you know someone close to you who doesn’t know Christ and isn’t saved and on their way to heaven, you can lead that person to Christ. If you don’t know what to say, just share what you know and what God has done for you. If they know they are a sinner and need a savior and they want to pray and ask forgiveness of their sins and trust Christ as their savior then you can lead them in prayer or let them pray on their own, it’s really simple.
If you need help with witnessing to others you can use my page here about heaven or you can ask for help from your Pastor or other Christians who can help you in this area. It’s helpful to memorize the scriptures that tell us about Christ and how to be saved. Everyone should know John 3:16 and on top of that a big help to lead someone to Christ is the Romans Road: Romans 3:23, Romans 3:10, Romans 5:8, Romans 6:23, Romans 10:9-10, Romans 10:13.
If You Experience Some Doubts About Your Own Salvation:
Now that you’re a new Christian I want you to know that you may experience doubts that you’re not saved or that nothing has really happened to you. This can be because the feeling of excitement has worn off, but it’s important to know that you’re not saved because you had a certain feeling when it happened.
The Bible Says “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” –Romans 10:9
Feelings don’t prove were saved or not, if you truly asked forgiveness of your sins and sincerely put your trust in Jesus Christ for your eternal salvation then YOU, MY FRIEND ARE SAVED!
As Christians we “Walk by faith, not by sight” – 2 Corinthians 5:7 this also means we don’t walk by feelings or our senses. When we trust Christ and put our faith in him, we are saved.
I highly encourage you if you are a new Christian to follow these steps I’ve outlined above. They will be a great help and encouragement to you. Even if you have never prayed, read a Bible before or been to church don’t feel silly to try. God wants you to talk to him and read his word, and the right church family will make you feel welcome and help you grow spiritually in your walk with the Lord.
